Just picked up a WOW minis starter today, and played 5 games at the game shop with it.  They said they got a limited prerelease of them.  To build the buzz.

Of course it is exactly like the demo, but nothing beats playing with the real miniatures, real maps, and custom dice.  Everybody who played thought is was fun and not too difficult, yet strategic enough for the grizzled veterans.  Most people were put off by the price per what you got and even more perturbed when they heard about how boosters were.

I have to agree with most that the quality of the miniatures is not much better than other miniatures line games I have seen.  At least from the starter.  The only major difference I could tell was there seemed to be more colors and paint steps.   The dice were pretty cheap, but the crit symbol and the different coloring for hit/miss was great and made games go quicker.   The maps were colorful and had alot going on them outside.  once in play they seemed rather bland and didnt change strategy as much as we would hope.  Of course with such a limited amount of games and only 2 map setups to choose from what can you expect?
The cards were of course high quality and very easy to read and understand.
 Â
The game impressed me overall with its simplicity and amount of time it took to learn to play was very minimal.  The games tended to go very quickly especially after the first 2 learner games.  I felt like 2 vs 2 could easily take anywhere from 10-25 minutes to play and mostly on the lower end of that.  Even though we only had the 2 warbands strategy and tactics and options changed every time and  you really didnt feel like you were doing the same stuff over and over.

There were some downsides to the game I found.  The detachable bases just didnt seem to fit right and on one figure I had to put it back on every time I changed anything.  Every figure except one had basing problems.   Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the game and made my money's worth of enjoyability in one day of playtime, I still have a hard time telling people that a $25 dollar starter with 4 figs is gonna be worth it.  The game is gonna be a hard game to collect with its hefty price tag.  Luckily all you need is 3 figures(1 booster)  to have a warband.
Â
Overall I like this game alot and would recomend it to anyone who wants a quick skirmish game.   I like the fact that the entry level gamer and the expert gamer can play and have fun with this.  Not usually so with other miniature games anymore.  The quality didnt jump out to me as way beyond anything I have seen before from prepainted minis, though the sculpts and painting were well done and not distracting.  None of the sculpts or paint jobs could be called terrible, worthless, or garbage,  which made me have a sigh of relief for a change.  (anyone picking up prepainted minis nowadays probly can feel me here).  Anyway if you love games like I do pick it up.  If you can find people to play it with it will be worth it.  If you cant, probably not so much,Â

You mean the store SOLD you the free Starter that UDE sent them to use for demos?

And I agree, the base issue is..annoying. Couldn't find any minis that actually fit on it right.

The maps are small and gave me the tactical impression of a "knife fight in a telephone box".
Which does have the virtue of making it hard to "stall" in tournament games.

For non-tournament play, I'll use larger maps & multi-player games.

That was the impression I got on the maps as well. Very small and cramped.  But for this game it seemed to work although 5 vs 5 or more would seem very cluttered to me.Â
