Sealed Booster, not in retail box. Bases did not work at all, fall off constantly. I was told they are pre-production bases and the real thing will be better. Bases are all the same and interchangeable, only with different edge decals matched to each of the 3 factions. Factions are monsters, horde, and alliance. Gameplay feels like the MMORPG in many ways - I thought the game mechanics were an excellent analogy to online gameplay, very cleaver. Terrain and placement is a bit important but not as much so as in D&D Minis for example.
The initial booster was passed out (not retail boxed), and the judges passed out a 1-sheet rules primer. Play was managed loosely and only those few competitive players were even asking questions. A booster is 3 different pieces all of one faction. Each mini is bagged with its hero card and 2 action cards. The judges had us check for matched character / hero card / action cards. Several players had to replace mis-matched characters. I am assuming this is a pre-production problem - if it carries into production boosters, sealed play will be a nightmare for stores to manage.
I pulled (Honor, Armor#/Resist#/Health#, Attackstats) Wilton Thorne - Forsaken Prot Warrior H4, A3/R2/H8, 2-1-3 melee (crit -1 armor debuff), protector (ala DDM Bodyguard) CARD1: Thunderclap 1-0-0 attack, adds 1 or more ticks to adjacent enemies CARD2: Revenge 0-1-7 attack, react when attacked but took no damage (crit +1 dmg) Delyn Darksun - BE Subtlety Rogue H5, A2/R2/H6, 2-1-4 melee (crit -1 armor debuff), +1 melee and enemies can't react if stats not adjecent to enemies and moves less than 2 this turn CARD1: Cold Blood - instant, next attack this turn, change one die to a crit CARD2: Gouge - 0-1-0, add 1 tick to target enemy Ta'zo - Troll Fire Mage H8, A1/R2/H5, 2-3-5 fire (crit +1 dmg), Impact (tick defender +1 when crits with fire attack) CARD1: Flamestrike 3-2-6 (crit +1 dmg, AOE cluster of 3 hexes) CARD2: Fire Blast 0-2-3 (crit +1 dmg)
Round 1 was getting used to rules. I figured out positioning and using action cards and focus on single enemy before the guy across from me. Playing 9 points (Rogue and Warrior) meant 2 kills and a VP = win, versus his 3+ kills to win. Repeated process 2nd round. 3rd round mixed it up with Ta'zo, instant fire attack and a strong range attack for only 2 ticks makes him awesome. Protection warrior paired up well.
Round 4 & 5 were with a 2nd booster. I lost the final match to a guy with a god-pull, Fillet (10 Health, he attacks or gets crit upon, each time adds +1 melee die!) and fire elemental with awesome cards, and a 3rd strong range guy. I was just way outmatched. Frostmane Troll is good, but not that good. The guy knew how to play also. Only problem was his MTG background - constantly interrupting my actions for judge calls...just a bit less fun to play against.
I will not be collecting all 66 models and 91 cards from the set, but I will buy a case or so and play it for kicks locally no doubt. Fun game, feels different than DDM, fast games (45 minute timed rounds, might be shorter in the future), takes less brainpower than DDM.
So I got the Bog Elemental, Map, and 2 boosters for my trouble. |
