| Greetings all, my gaming group just decided to switch over to 4th edition, we ran a basic adventure to get familiar with the system. So far so good, I really like this system alot, the combat options are the best I have used so far for d&d. Anyways, I have always played a caster, but this time im switchin it up a bit, I goin play a ranger, probaly an elf. We are using the 22 point spend system for our ability scores. Here is what I came up with, 14S,13C,16D,10I,14W,10C with the elven racial bonus, that gives me a 18dex and 16 Wis. Can anyone improve on this, or perhaps suggest another race. Im a noob to the melee role, and debated over my ability scores. | | | |

| With a Ranger, dex is both the characters main +tohit & the AC. So you really want dex as high as possible. Get it up to 20 whatever you have to drop to achieve that. Remember it's legal to have one of your stats an 8.
Elf is good for a Ranger. Any race that adds Dex+2 would be acceptable. Halfling is worth considering, for all the boosts to AC the race gets. | | | |

High Str, helps if your a 2WF ranger with (e.g. a pair of scimitars) And since a lot of ranger abilities work for both melee & ranged. It's common to try to build for both options. Personally I'd take a starting str=13 (and save the +2-points for str:14 to use elsewhere)
Wis would be my choice for the 2ndry stat, Perception runs off Wis as do a few interesting ranger abilities.
