what is this D&D open you speak of? Oh, the GenCon thing. Well I can't go to GenCon... but my build isn't completely finished. It is looking really OP right now though.

Good choice, my friend.  I think Dragonborn are... um.... born paladins?

I'm gonna try my hand at a dragonborn and half-elf build.  I'll post them tonight.

Dragonborn are very effective paladins. Haven't seen how to "break"a paladin build yet, though, since dragonborn by itself doesn't equate broken paladin (nor does Tiefling break warlock).

Here we go.  These two characters are the first two I've actually statted up, and I must say that I'm struck by the sheer number of choices I had- both of these characters could have been radically different with a couple of different choices by yours truly.

I lied, by the way... I decided to make a dragonborn paladin and a halfling, not half-elf paladin.

First up, the Dragonborn:

Shazzarith, Bastion of Bahamut

18 Str         HP: 29        Surge Value: 9            Surges/Day: 12
11 Dex     Â
14 Con       AC: 20        Fort: 15        Refl: 11        Will: 14    Â
08 Int      Â
12 Wis       Move: 5      Init: +0
16 Cha

POWERS

Melee Attack (at-will, standard, +7 vs AC, 1d10+4 damage)
Divine Challenge (at-will, minor, mark a target; if target attacks someone else, it takes 6 radiant damage)
Channel Divinity: Divine Mettle (encounter, minor action, target makes immediate save at +3)
Channel Divinity: Divine Strength (encounter, minor action, Next attack gets +4 damage)
Lay on Hands (at-will, 2/day, minor, spend a surge, target gains hit points equal to his surge value)
Enfeebling Strike (at-will, standard, +6 vs AC, 1d10+3 damage and If target is marked, it gets -2 to hit next round)
Valiant Strike (at-will, standard, +7 +1/adjacent enemy vs. AC, 1d10+4 damage)
Piercing Smite (encounter, standard, +7 vs Ref, 2d10+4 damage and target and one other opponent are marked next round)
Paladin's Judgment (daily, standard, +7 vs AC, 3d10 +4, ally can spend a healing surge)
Dragon's Breath (encounter, minor, close burst 3, +6 vs Ref, 1d6+2 lightning damage)

Feats: Weapon Proficiency: Bastard Sword

Trained Skills: Religion (+4), Intimidate (+10), Insight (+7), Athletics (+5)

Equipment: Plate Mail, Bastard Sword, Heavy Shield, Holy Symbol

Shazzarith is the towering anchor that holds the line in combat.  He deals good damage, has the best possible armor class and has an excellent surge value.  His goal is to ensure that the toughest opponent his band faces will be attacking him, and his enfeebling strike, lay-on-hands and innate physical defense makes him up to the task of absorbing the punishment such dangerous foes deal.  He also happens to be the proverbial broad side of a barn- anyone that can target reflex saves will find him hilariously easy to hit.  Fortunately, such attacks aren't TOO commonplace, and his healing abilities should be enough to weather some amount of damage meted out in that manner.

******************************************************

Now, on to someone completely different:

Geledral, blade of Pelor (halfling paladin)

10 Str         HP: 28        Surge Value: 7            Surges/Day: 11
16 Dex
13 Con       AC: 18        Fort: 12        Refl: 14        Will: 15    Â
08 Int
14 Wis        Move: 6      Init: +3
18 Cha

POWERS

Melee Attack (at-will, standard, +2 vs AC, 1d8 damage, +1d8 on a crit)
Divine Challenge (at-will, minor, mark a target; if target attacks someone else, it takes 7 radiant damage)
Channel Divinity: Divine Mettle (encounter, minor action, target makes immediate save at +4)
Lay on Hands (at-will, 3/day, minor, spend a surge, target gains hit points equal to his surge value)
Bolstering Strike (at-will, standard, +6 vs AC, 1d8+4 damage and gain 2 temporary hp, +1d8 damage on a crit)
Enfeebling Strike (at-will, standard, +6 vs AC, 1d8+4 damage and If target is marked, it gets -2 to hit next round)
Fearsome Smite (encounter, standard, +6 vs AC, 2d8+4 damage and target gets -2 to attacks until end of your next turn)
On Pain of Death (daily, standard, +4 vs Will, 3d8+4 damage and 1d8 after target makes attacks on its turn, save ends)
Second Chance (encounter, interrupt, enemy rerolls a hit against you)

Feats/Traits: Halfling Agility (-2 to rerolls caused by Second Chance, Bold (+5 save vs. fear), Nimble (+2 AC against opportunity attacks)

Trained Skills: Religion (+4), Diplomacy (+9), Insight (+7), Heal (+7)

Equipment: Hide Armor, scimitar, Heavy Shield, Holy Symbol

Geledral is nowhere near optimized, that's for sure.  He has some things working for him compared to Shazz, though.  He's faster and will tend to go sooner in a combat, his defenses are better-rounded and his second chance ability will make him far less susceptible to critical hits and truly nasty attacks.  His damage is respectable, though Shazz does a bit more.  His ability to help his companions via healing is better than Shazz's.

I think I'd play either of these, to be honest, though I (and most other people, i bet) would prefer the dragonborn.

At Gencon, they have the D&D championships. The D&D open is the qualifying rounds. Similar to the grinder for DDM.

My brother just created his first 4E character, a human paladin of Bahamut. Looks pretty cool. I like the powers a paladin gets as well.

That's my favorite part, the combined butt-whooping and healing powers, and they are all good!  I say this is one of the most versatile classes there are.

I mean as far as being the new hotness for power and versatility.

The more I read different class powers, the more I think that no individual class is the new hotness for power and versatility. They're all pretty darn powerful and versatile.

I've also decided I really like the fact that you can run a paladin without a decent strength score. I love the number of Cha vs. defense powers. Really gives paladins a different flavor (one I really like).

Yeah, as I read those, I thought:
"You could play the uber buff paladin of yore.

Or, you could play the mild man of faith and will."

And I like those options.

I'm still eager to see Ghendar's and van's paladins.

My cousin just created a dragonborn paladin, and even though he's not my character I really like him. I can definitely see the perfect combination of race and class there.

I'm seeing that more and more in 4E, but I'm not sure if I like it or not.

Yeah, I think it should be limited somewhat, but I think one here and there is pretty cool.

I am considering a Halfling Paladin;

Str:10
Con:12
Dex:13
Int:8
Wis:13
Char:20

alternativly

str:10
con:12
dex:14
Int:8
Wis:16
Char:18

Looking at the effects of the Charisma based abilities, the obvious name for this character is Yoda.
e.g; Astral speech (Utility:2) just begs to be used with a casual hand wave & the phrase "These arn't the droids your looking for".
