Hey there,

I've been out of the loop for a while, but am going to get back into D&D.  I was wondering...i heard rumors of there being software for the 4th ed...is that going to still take place, and if so when? and what are we to expect?

cheers.

It's called D&D Insider. $60/year ($5/month) or a little more per month if you pay monthly or every 3 months. Subscription service is supposed to go live sometime in early October.

For the fee you get Dungeon and Dragon magazines, full access to the Rules Compendium, and eventually the character generator. There's also an encounter generator, ability generator, and a monster builder should go live by the end of October.

Theoretically at some unnamed point in the distant future you'll get access to the character generator, dungeon builder and game table features.

For more info try D&D Insider

My unsolicited opinion is that the dungeon builder, game table, and monster builder might be worth $5/month. Won't know until they actually exist for end users. Can't say the same for Dungeon/Dragon but I also never used the print versions, either. The Rules Compendium is a solid feature as well and if they actually manage to stick to the update schedule it will definitely be worth the nominal access fee.

Hi Everyone,

Wizards just sent me a beta for the Character Builder at D&D Insider. It is a very complete 4e system.

So far I have only created first level characters through the system, but I will have to admit I am impressed. It is very detailed. This will mean that generating characters will be so easy.

I was a die hard 3.5 gamer and used the very decent E-tools program. So far, this is far better both in the tools and 4e in general. Now I know why WotC cancelled Code Monkey's license.

Later,

Mazra

I used hero forge and loved it. Was hoping to see a 4e version come about somehow.
