| I have to admit what I don't like at all in 4th ed. is the way multiclassing is presented. If someone knows or has designed an alternate multiclassing system I'll be very happy to study it.

| Multiclassing is like this: During the heroic tiers, you can take certian feats and swap out an encounter, daily, or a utility power with once class only first chosen by the inital feat (where you get a class ability, usually).
If, at the paragon pier, you decide that you want even more powers of this second class, then--instead of taking a paragon path-- essentiall 'Multi-Class' and take powers in the class you took the feats in (you have to take the four Multi-classing feats to be able to do this). As an 11th level power, you can switch out one at will power with one of your secondary class). You also get an encounter power of, I believe, up to 7th level. then at 12, you can take a utility power up to 10th level in the second class, and at 20th level, you can take a Daily power in the second class of up to 19th level in Power.
You progress as normal in your initial class during the paragon tier. So essentially, multi-classing isn't really taking levels in another class--it's taking that class as a 'paragon path' and getting a few buff abilities from it. And, of course, the inital four powers you get in the heroic tier (but those aren't free--you have to swap powers out for them).
Ovbiously, you'd want to compare classes that have complimentary attributes as thier main function: Paladin and (Surprisingly) Warlock if they are Cha based, Rogue and Ranger (Archer style) since they are Dex based. Cleric (melee oriented) and Fighter are good, as are Fighter/Warlord, and (oddly enough) Cleric/Warlord. Cleric/Paladin as a Cha/Wis combo actually isn't bad. Swordmage/Wizard is pretty awesome, as both are Int Based. Fighter/Ranger (Melee style) can be pretty brutal as well.
The main detraction from the paragon path powers is you don't get the random special abilities, like +4 during Action point attacks, or whatnot. But if you're building a character with a certain flavor, then it has some pretty exciting possibilities. Plus, most of the paragon paths frankly suck, so losing an ability or two just isn't that big of a deal. | | | |
