Subject: adventure for solo PC?

I'm trying to come up with a short adventure for a solo PC, level 1, so I can introduce a friend of mine to the game. What's a little confused about is how many encounters, mostly combats, would be too much of a challenge.

Here's what I came up with, list-wise. They are in no particular order.

1. 4 Goblin Cutters
2. 2 Goblin Warriors
3. 1 Goblin Sharpshooter
4. 4 Giant Rats
5. 3 Zombie Rotters
6. 4 Decrepit Skeletons
7. 1 Hobgoblin Warcaster and 1 Goblin Blackblade (main boss and his sidekick)
8. Spear Gauntlet trap
9. Collapsing stairway trap

Calculating total XP if every encounter is completed, it would be 1214, would would get him to level 2.


I'm still working out the hook and the storyline of this adventure, but I first wanted to make sure this could be done, or what (if anything) should be reworked.

For the hook/storyline say it's a small job he has to complete in order to join a band on adventurers.

I think that solo adventures 4e suffer from being more luck-dependent than larger combats.Â

I've tried several solo battles, and they often end up being surprisingly easy or killing the lone pc.ÂIf the monster leads off with a critical, and the hero rolls low on the first few attacks (likely including the encounter attack), he/she will be in trouble.ÂConversely, if the hero rolls high on the first few attacks, the fight will be over quickly.

I recommend providing the pc with some healing potions to help out with the tough-dice-luck encounters.ÂI’d also recommend planning for the pc to be captured (with a future escape?) if he/she has a bad encounter and falls below 0 hp.

Encounter 2 and 7 look like they could be tough for a solo pc (especially if bad dice luck arrives).ÂAt least give the player some forewarning to these tough battles, so that they won’t hesitate to use their daily power, action point, and healing potions in them.

Thanks fiot the suggestions. Encounter 7 is actually the final battle, and there will be some opportunity to rest and heal before that encounter. I do already have some potions available to the pc as part of the treasure bundles the DMG calls for.

Username, I like your hook idea. Here's how I might use it: the warcaster has been n a nuisance to the nearby town, and a group of adventurers is looking for another to join their band (coincedentally the class of the PC) and as the initiation they ask him to go to its lair and fight them off, so show his mettle.

One idea I came up with, as a possibility to make it easier, would be to change the gobolinoids to kobolds. How would that be?

Bit of a late reply but thought that this might help.  I working on a site which is intended to introduce people to the game.  I'm still working on it but theres a bit of material to start off, a couple of solo quests and a dungeon crawl.  Hope it helps!

I tried your 1st-level solo (the Crypt) and it is very well done. Great work!

I used a Rogue and a Paladin and I'm most of the way through (I think?).  It is a decent challenge for 2 pc's, but I think that it would be a bit tough for only one pc.

Hey thanks guys.  its a fair bit of work but i also quite enjoy the DM thing.  I agree, its a bit difficult running through it with only one PC.  I came up with the idea for the site before i had thought out the actual mechanics of the skill challenges.  You end up missing out on alot of the skill challengers and dying more often with only 1 PC.  Some encounters bordering on impossible.

I've put development of the site on hold temperarily due to work commitments.  When i get back to it, i'm going to be working more on the campaign which i plan to take 2 PC's up to level 5 - 7 approx. I have a tonne of ideas for the campaign, just need some time to execute them.
