| Posted By Cieran on 01/20/2007 5:22 PM what was this really about in the first place. i only just started posting here. Many months ago, the maxminis community had decided to create their own campaign setting world. When the community split, and several left for hordelings, this project died quickly.

About starting it back up? I don't know. I'm not interested, personally. It isn't the same without several folks who aren't here anymore.
Why the split? It's quite complicated, but it was because the host of this website offended most of the primary moderators and the main site programmer in such a way that they pretty much left for good. Many old timers left for good. Several others kind of keep track of both sites. Some have lost interest in either website and don't bother much with an online messageboard.
Maxminis used to be a more vibrant place. It used to look better too, before the interface was changed when the site was "upgraded".

| | Why not go for it anyways? There was a thread about people who were still interested so there are people out there. If you want to work on it, do it. I bet if someone got the ball rolling others might start contributing again. Sometimes threads and projects can be like flowers in the desert: they ook dead but all they need is a little input and then they are blooming again. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | If it was to start up again. I think you have to prune the area'a that the original owners are gone. It would be unfair to give them to some one else to do and if they are not going to be finish there is no point. | | Yes I am Gelatinous.

| Posted By Cieran on 02/02/2007 4:39 PM ok. is there a link to the story in particular? whats the history, politics, etc... There was not a story developed yet. It was more like a really cool map was made, and several people starting saying, "I'll make a region in such and such area with such and such types of creatures." It was more of a hodge podge of ideas that didn't really work together. There was a variety of flavors that didn't really mix together. Some ideas seemed cartoony or Eberronish, while others seemed more serious. Part of the problem was that there wasn't a cohesive idea worked out.

| | I must agree.
Everyone liked there own areas of course, but there a lot of area's that didn't have wide spread appeal.
It seamed that some people didn't look at what other people had done before writing thier own areas. | | Yes I am Gelatinous.

| My opinion on this "New World" is that it was too big of a project to start with. For example there were no limitations to what the Maxmini members could do and nothing never really mathched up.
I think if this is to ever work again we need to approach this larg scale project at a different angle. We need to build this "world" starting with very small areas, such as towns and cities. From that point we could expand off of those smaller locations to create a larger kingdom, eventually developing into a world. By making the world this way we can get more detailed and use the small areas we develop along the way in adventures if we need to.
The first step would be is to remove everyone's "claims" to sections of the map and pick a good center point where we can start this bottom up process. We will then start creating a city by contributing buildings or areas as in this thread:
Help Me Build A City (Winner!!)
It would also help if some one had their own website where we can post the new additions as we go. If anyone would be willing to take this new approach to the world just post and we'll see if we can't get things back on the right track again.

Yeah, this was a problem for me as well. There was no cohesive world idea. Just several people creating their own stuff in a vacuum. Some attempts were made to connect areas, but not enough, imo.
I think Dalamar posted some good tips how to do this project in a more cohesive way.

| I'd be willing to help out too. Although if this project is really going to work we should start with a small area that we all work on together. This way we can provide many land features, cities, and NPCs and mix them together to create a connection between the world's inhabitants. This way it will seem more real.
We just have to pick a starting point and this projet will start up again moving faster than ever.
Do you guys mind that we build the world this way? If your in, let's get this world rollin'. | | later.

It is still a Maxminis contributer site, it will make things a little more organized.

| | If the ideas/world is random, why not incorporate that in to it's design, something similar to Ravenloft's fog that swallows people and dumps them somewhere else, except perhaps there are powerful entities (perhaps dieties) that keep the realms in constant flux - therefore getting very different flavours side-by-side. | This idea does seem to be dead, but I had a thought about this project and the upcoming Points of Light stuff with 4e.
Rather than designing a bunch of unusual nations and trying to link them together coherently, you could focus on making interesting self-contained locales that could be popped into any campaign.
Forget about the map, forget about the nation and world scale and make really unique little bits that may or may not connect into a larger picture later.
Not really a new idea since some of the threads here are already about little areas like that, but it's a way to potentially make the points of light concept more palatable. *shrug*
