For me it would depend on when it's taking place, a tourney of this magnitude should span several months if it got a large pool of participants.

What about this for an idea we get countries to play off their players producing say a team of champions for each country which then. partake in a tournament to decide who reigns supreme.

The advantages of this is that leading up to the finals timezones arent as much of an issue as you are only playing others from your country also i could get each country to run its own games leading up to the finals .

I am interested in playing and will help coordinate the tournament.  Let me know.  I can coordinate the US portion if you want.  Do you want to do swiss tournament style or something like double elimination?

PM me.

Just some points/thoughts That i would like opinions on

1) I feel we should let greyhaze play he does seem quite excited
2)We will need clearly defined rules which apply to everyone across the board including
a)timetable rules eg games must be played within 1 week of match being posted..
b)what happens in the event of a no show?,
c)how are points allocated in a draw or no show ?
d)what occurs if an acceptable time for a game cant be reached by both players?,
e)do we need a 3rd party present to ensure fair game play ?
f)is it the responsibility of the 3rd party to point out wrongful play ?
g ) can we get someone else to ype these out as my punctuation is atrocious?

3)Do we limit entries to a certain number?
4)Do we make it that all bands have to be submitted b4 the beginning of tournament can begin and are these then posted publicly at time matchs are posted
5) I think anyone involved in the organising if they wish to play must submit bands well before anyone else does, so as to avoid any issues with metagaming
6) I want to make sure this is open to all people interested so we should make sure to post on all message boards leading up to tourney
7)I think we will need a uniform way of reporting match results that would be easy for all to understand
and we may also need somewhere to post all results Faragdar's warband challenge result page looks good so maybe something like that

OK thoughts .....and feel free to email me kvierow@hotmail.com

1) I feel we should let greyhaze play he does seem quite excited
Ok, if we have to

2)We will need clearly defined rules which apply to everyone across the board including
I agree and the orgainizers can get together to make sure this happens

a)timetable rules eg games must be played within 1 week of match being posted..
Yes

b)what happens in the event of a no show?,
They lose.  Sometimes you can extend the time for some games.  It is usually up to the organizer to work these issues out.

c)how are points allocated in a draw or no show ?
I propose a double elimination style tournament, so points are not an issue

d)what occurs if an acceptable time for a game cant be reached by both players?,
You roll randomly to determine the winner

e)do we need a 3rd party present to ensure fair game play ?
No need.  Most everyone is good sports.  Make sure that everyone makes a log of their games, so if there is an issue, the organizers can review and make a ruling.

f)is it the responsibility of the 3rd party to point out wrongful play ?
Most people who watch the games help with some of the rules anyways.

g ) can we get someone else to ype these out as my punctuation is atrocious?
Yes, I can do that.

3)Do we limit entries to a certain number?
We don't have to, but I believe it is up to the organizer to say how much they can handle.  I will probably limit the US tournament to 32 players

4)Do we make it that all bands have to be submitted b4 the beginning of tournament can begin and are these then posted publicly at time matchs are posted
Yes and I have a great way to do that

5) I think anyone involved in the organising if they wish to play must submit bands well before anyone else does, so as to avoid any issues with metagaming
We can submit our bands to each other early to verify we are playing fair.

6) I want to make sure this is open to all people interested so we should make sure to post on all message boards leading up to tourney
Each area organizer should post to all the boards.

7)I think we will need a uniform way of reporting match results that would be easy for all to understand
and we may also need somewhere to post all results Faragdar's warband challenge result page looks good so maybe something like that
I currently orgainize under the same blog site as Old Coast and the Battleground tournaments.  Here is the link
http://simage-dream.blogspot.com/
Each organizer can create their own blog page to track everything.

OK thoughts .....and feel free to email me kvierow@hotmail.com

Here is what I am thinking.  Four major areas (US, Canada, Europe and Other) compete within their own areas.  The top four from each group play in one tournament.  I still like the idea of double elimination format.  This keeps us from getting bogged down in alot of players not playing because they have two or more losses in a swiss format.  Also it can be alot quicker when you get to the final rounds.  I will send you an email on the formats.  I will send you an email soon with more info.

The only real problem I see right now, is timing. There will have to be some kind of availability worked out within the different time zones, and I suck at figuring out times in time zones. But, anyways, the availability issue across vastly different time zones.

1) Indeed.
2) Ok.
a) 1 week is fair.
b) "no show" is a by.
c) 1 pt for a by, 2pts for a draw, 3pts for a win?
d) If both players are unavailable, perhaps they both get "byes".
e) Yes. Despite good sportsmanship, it's better to have a 3rd party present to help with rule infractions.
f) Yes. Mind you, only wrongful play as far as the rules.
g) No. Suck it up.

3) Nah. Unless you mean for 1 player?
4) Yes, all bands should be submitted to the moderator, much like the warband challenges, then posted.
5) See above.
6) Groovy.
7) Faragdar's warband challenge is a good launch point.

OK so couple of things we need... an up to date copy of minis rules and errata or links to
and tourney rules for assault also havent played vassal in a while how many rounds are played for assault nowadays? Also I think the idea of regions will be the best which if we get the top 4 from each we will end up with 16 for the finals It might become really hard with other as a region depending on how many we get because that may mean really different time zones but i shall deal with that when i come to it if it occurs so at this point we have

REGION 1 USA coordinated by Simage
REGION 2 Canada coordinated by Raland
REGION 4 Europe coordinated by Janos M
REGION 5 The rest of the WORLD coordinated by Kypdurron

Playing.. Greyhaze

My vote is for a double elimination format.  It is easier to play and easier to keep people from playing each other more than once.  I also prevents people from losing interest after losing a couple of games.  Also you don't have to track points.  I have powerpoint samples of double elimination formats that I can send.  It is best played in groups with a factor of 8.  I am hoping to do the US tournament in this format due to the potential large amount of players.  We should limit the rounds to 8.  Assault format using standard DCI rules and the official clarifications on the Wizards website.

Having the tourney divided the way we do, takes care of most if not all potential time zone created schedule conflicts untill maybe the final rounds, which then time to arrange a game could be expanded.

Not sure there needs to be any limit on players, if you're hoping to determine an online champ of sorts and the interest level is that high why exclude?

I have a slight preference of Swiss to Double Elimination.

I have seen and used the blog sites mentioned and are very good for handling/tracking this kind of thing.

Logfiles are very good means of ensuring fair play and as a reference to for disputes after the fact

A match round limit is needed for sure, closest method I've seen to simulate a timed match.

Should Greyhaze prefer to handle the Canadian side of things I would gladly differ to his proven organization abilities.

Would bands have to be pre-submitted?  Couldn't you consider allowing a person to change from round to round?  Would require less tracking, less preparation, and variance to me could sustain interest better.

The format type and number of entrants will determine the length of this thing, one thing to consider is if it will overlap the next set release.  New set may wane the interest of some seeing this completed.

Shouldn't the number of people determine how many regional champs they produce? I don't think Canada has as many players as the states. Can this be sorted out better once all entrants have been determined?

Raland, I'll leave Canada in your capable hands. I'm being kept busy with a lot of projects and wouldn't be able to give this the proper kind of attention - as I forgot to check in on this thread for the past several days - for example.

Before I answer on tournament type, what is double elimination? Is that where you can lose your first match, but the next match you lose you're out?

That's interesting, seeing as if you lose 2x in swiss you're generally out anyways.

So I take it if you win your first match and lose later on, you move to the lower tier to try to battle your way back up. This works for me.

Greyhaze yep thats how it works ... and if there are no objections I think that will be the format .
I'd like to use that exact template for the finals, so 4 champs from each region would work best but we will have to wait and see the number of entrants
I think entrants should keep the same band all the way through finals. but it is up to each region to determine their champ the way they see fit .
Greyhaze I may take you up on the offer of using DDM spoilers as we may need a bit more room I think... Whats the chance's of a temporary forum just for this tourney ?
I'm just thinking each region may need a thread for game organising and schedule, we will need a thread for game reporting, a rules and erreta thread thats easy to access
and if we can put it all in the one place it will prolly help a lot ! thoughts?
